THE BRAZILIAN FILM PERMIT LAW

Foreign audiovisual production businesses that intend to carry out work in Brazil may only do so by means of contracts with Brazilian production businesses with national capital, and employing a crew composed of at least one third Brazilian artists and techinicians. According to the estabilished law 8,401/92, wherein (article IV ), it is mandatory that this type of production must be reported to the Ministry of Culture`s Secretariat for the Development of Audiovisual. The whole process is simple and quickly approved after the fulfillment of the legal requirements.

THE PROCESS TO OBTAIN A BRAZILIAN PERMIT

APPROXIMATELY
1 WEEK


1.  Foreign producers must sign a contract with a Brazilian producer.

2. The Brazilian producer must deliver copies of the contract to the Ministries of Culture and labor, stating the percentage of Brazilian Workers, and must also give the passport numbers, citizenship, duties, place of departure, list of equipment, and expected duration of work by the foreign crew.

3. After approving the request made by the Brazilian co-producer, the Ministry of Culture`s Secretariat for the Development of Audiovisual will send the authorization to the Ministry of External Relations for concession of the respective visa.


Q: When do I need to hire a local producer?
A: Always.

Due to the United States policy of fingerprinting and photographing all incoming visitors to the U.S., Brazil has adopted a similar policy for all Americans visiting Brazil. In the first two months of 2004, please allow one extra day of travel at the beginning of your trip to Brazil for this process.
